Samsung Galaxy Core review: Two for one

Introduction

Dual-SIM devices are almost exclusively a money-conscious affair and the Samsung Galaxy Core sticks to the playbook. It's just that when you look to optimize you monthly mobile spending by taking advantage of two different contracts, you don't usually want to spend big on a high-end smartphone and look for value-for-money offerings.

Despite its sub-€200 price tag the Samsung Galaxy Core, which also comes in single-SIM flavor, still offers a dual-core CPU, very reasonable 217ppi screen and a 5MP camera, as well as a styling reminiscent of the Galaxy S4 flagship. And it's all squeezed in a 9mm slim body, which while no longer impressive in the higher market tiers is quite the feature with entry level smartphones.

The Android version is charge of the Samsung Galaxy Core is also very respectful - 4.1 Jelly Bean is basically as good as it gets in this price range. It should keep things nicely smooth thanks to its Project Butter Optimizations and it's easily more functional than Windows Phone 8, which is the main Android rival in the lower market segments.

The spec sheet is often louder than words so check it out.

Key features

  • Quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE; quad-band 3G with HSPA; optional Dual-SIM with dual stand-by and 3G on both SIMs
  • 4.3" 16M-color WVGA TFT capacitive touchscreen; 217ppi
  • Android OS v4.1.2 Jelly Bean with TouchWiz UI
  • Dual-core 1.2GHz Cortex-A5 CPU, Adreno 203 GPU
  • 1GB of RAM
  • 5 MP autofocus camera with LED flash, 480p video recording @ 30fps
  • VGA front-facing camera
  • Wi-Fi b/g/n, hotspot
  • GPS with A-GPS
  • 8GB of built-in storage
  • microSD card slot
  • microUSB 2.0 port
  • Bluetooth v3.0
  • Stereo FM radio with RDS
  • Standard 3.5 mm audio jack
  • Accelerometer and proximity sensor
  • 1,800mAh battery; user replaceable

Main disadvantages

  • No HD video recording
  • No NFC
  • No ambient light sensor
  • Feeble chipset

Of course the dual-SIM smartphone market is no longer the wasteland it was a couple of years ago, so the Samsung Galaxy Core will face some stiff competition. Devices like the HTC Desire 600 or Sony's Xperia M are ready to take advantage of any chinks in the Galaxy Core armor and when you read the fine print you realize there are quite a few those.

The Samsung Galaxy Core at HQ

The CPU core count and clock speed are quite nicely sounding, but its Cortex-A5 nature certainly puts a big question mark over the performance. And while we have seen some pretty good 5MP snappers from Samsung this particular one fails quite miserably on the video front.

Then again it's not about setting benchmark or pixel density records in these parts of the market. What matters here is that least corners are cut and the smartphone performance is well balanced. Those are the two things we are about to test right now - join us after the break as we give the Galaxy Core a thorough hardware examination.

New HTC One Max details arrive, 2.1MP front cam confirmed

HTC One Max announcement should happen in September at IFA, around the same time Samsung is going to unveil the Galaxy Note III. It seems, though, that HTC is having some trouble keeping the device under wraps as yet another bit of info about it surfaced online today.

First we got to see some live pictures of the One Max, along with alleged specs. Then an unfinished official render popped up. We also saw the HTC One Max next to a Motorola XT882 as well as sized up next to an HTC One mini and a regular HTC One. The last of those also revealed that the One Max back might boast a fingerprint sensor.

Today, we get to learn some more specs of the HTC One Max. The new pieces of info detail the front camera, which should be 2.1MP (same as HTC One). According to the leak though the One Max will run on the latest Android 4.3 Jelly Bean and Sense UI 5.5.

We also received confirmation of some of the previously rumored specs - a 5.9" 1080p display, Snapdragon 800 chipset (quad-core 2.3GHz Krait 400 CPU, Adreno 330 GPU, 2GB RAM), a 4MP UltraPixel camera and Wi-Fi a/ac/b/g/n.

There is no word on the fingerprint scanner though nor is there indication of the One Max will pack a stylus.

Robert Downey Jr. is already working hard to promote the One Max and we are hoping HTC will really deliver a device to live up to all the hype. September is close, so it won't take long before we find out.

In other news a guy using a blue HTC One was photographed in Taiwan. It's unclear if it's the real device or the guy just painted the panels by himself. We already know such version is coming, but if this is the real deal than its market release might be just around the corner.

Micromax outs Canvas Doodle 2 affordable quad-core droid

Micromax has unveiled the latest addition to its smartphone lineup, dubbed Canvas Doodle 2. The device will retail for INR19,990 (approximately $310) and will be available throughout India starting today.

The Micromax Canvas Doodle 2 has a 5.7" IPS LCD with a resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, which results in a density of around 257 ppi. Te Canvas Doodle 2 is powered by a MediaTek 6589 chipset with quad-core 1.2 GHz Cortex-A7 CPU and 1GB of RAM. A 2600 mAh battery powers the whole thing.

Micromax Canvas Doodle 2 the stylus

It runs on Android 4.2.1. Imaging is handled by a 12 MP rear camera and a 5 MP front-facing one. There's also 1080p video recording. There are 16 GB of internal storage, which sadly appear to not be expandable.

Equipped with a stylus, which comes in the retail package, the Canvas Doodle 2 lets you... well, doodle over pictures with the M!Doodle app. There's also a flip cover accessory, which moonlights as a kick-stand.

The Micromax Canvas Doodle 2 comes with M!Doodle, M!Live, M!Zone and M!Security preinstalled among other apps. On a more absurd note you can blow on the device to wake it up and also shake it if you want to appear more normal.

A bunch of new Sony Xperia Z1 (Honami) live photos arrive

Another day, another Honami leak. Today, Sony's highly anticipated flagship, the Xperia Z1 a.k.a. Honami, has leaked in a bunch of live shots, giving us an even better look of its design prior to its expected announcement on September 4.

The version shown here has a white paintjob with a silver frame and black front panel. We've previously been treated to black units mostly, but now we get to confirm a second color combination for the Sony Xperia Z1.

This latest set of pics has the device appearing somewhat thicker than the Xperia Z, likely due in part to the rumored addition of a 3,000Mah battery and improved waterproofing.

Check back with us on September 4 for the official announcement. Until then, Sony has outed an image of the special 20MP camera sensor found on the Honami, which has a 1/2.3" sensor - some 70% larger than most smartphone camera sensors on the market.

Thanks, Igor, for the tip!

LG Optimus L9 II photo leaks ahead of premiere, specs in tow

LG Optimus L9 was the only one from the L-lineup not to receive a successor at the last MWC but it seems this will change soon. As the rumor has it the LG Optimus L9 II will be unveiled and launched very soon.

The handset looks a lot like its predecessor, but loses the hardware Home key in favor of a capacitive one. The Optimus L9 II will supposedly run on a Qualcomm's MSM8230 Snapdragon S4 chipset with a dual-core 1GHz Krait processor, Adreno 305 graphics and 1GB of RAM.

The rest of the L9 II specs include an 8MP rear and a 1.3MP front camera, 8GB expandable internal storage and a 2150 mAh battery. The Android version in charge is rumored to be 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.

If the official announcement is indeed just around the corner then we'll know all details very soon.
